Biography: Darrell D. Cantrell began his railroad career in 1963, as a trackman with the Frisco Railway in Oswego, Kansas. The Frisco was the predecessor railroad of the Burlington Northern Railroad, which merged with the Santa Fe Railway in 1995 to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Co. (BNSF).

Cantrell held numerous supervisory positions with BNSF and its predecessors, including Roadmaster, Manager of Gangs, Maintenance Engineer, Director Work Equipment, Director Maintenance, and Director of Service Agreements. He was Director Roadway Planning, headquartered in Fort Worth Texas, where he served until his retirement.

Since retiring in 1999, Cantrell has provided railroad consulting world-wide through his company, Cantrell Rail Services, Inc. He has also consulted for Plasser Theurer and AmstedRPS (Unit Rail) for several years, in addition to many railroads worldwide.

Cantrell is Past President of AREMA (American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association). His previous involvement with the organization included participation in AREA (American Railway Engineering Association) and the Roadmaster and Maintenance of Way Association.

In 2008-09, he was project manager, editor and author for the International Heavy Haul Association publication, Guidelines to Best Practices for Heavy Haul Railway Operations: Infrastructure Construction and Maintenance Issues.
